The $50P Pot Rack

December 3, 2009

Have you seen Julie and Julia? Because I have, three times now, and I love love love love love it. I love the clothing, the apartments, the glorious food. And I love Julia’s pot rack.

I know. Trust me to freak out about something like a pot rack. But people, I love it. I love the simplicity of it, the practicality of it, and the fact that it is Julia’s. Love. Here’s a photo, courtesy of the Smithsonian.

Do you see it? In the very back of the kitchen is a piece of peg board, and every one of Julia’s pots and pans.

le sigh

After I saw the movie for the first time, I sat in my kitchen and looked around. I realized immediately that I had a perfect place for a Julia-style pot rack! My little heart began to flutter, and I raced to the Home Depot!

(Well… if we’re being really honest… I went to the Home Depot three months later. Because I’m super speedy.)

Did you know that you can purchase sheets of peg board and MDF from the Home Depot, and that they will cut it to size for you? My local store will give you two cuts for free (enough to size a board down once), and charges fifty cents for each additional cut. This brought the total cost of the actual peg board piece to a whopping $14.25. I also purchased a 1″ x 1″ strip of wood for $.99, and a package of mixed hooks and hangers designed for peg board use for $6.70. I cut the 1″ x 1″ wood into two pieces, one each for the top and bottom of the peg board. I drilled through the two pieces at marked intervals, and then, using two eight 2″ wood screws, I screwed the peg board to the 1″ square blocks and into the wall. I also used several measured screws that had been included in the peg pack to secure the peg board around the sides. Then I put up my hooks and hung my pots and pans! And voila!

My very own Julia-style pot rack now graces my kitchen! While this project didn’t include re-used materials, I’m so pleased with the increased functionality of my kitchen (bonus: I have an entirely empty cabinet where my pots and pans used to be).

Project totals: $21.94 and about three hours of my life, including the Home Depot trip!

That’s seriously awesome. I don’t have any place in my kitchen where that would work, but someday, in a million gazillion years when we get a house of our own, I’m going to strongly suggest to my husband that this gets done!

    Thanks for writing about this.

I definitely plan on implementing this awesomeness into my house.

I haven’t seen the movie yet. I know! I am lame. It’s at the top of my Netflix when it is released.

I love the pot rack! Super smart idea.

That is such a unique idea, and I bet it frees up a TON of cabinet space!

I’ve coveted a rack like that for a long time (insert joke here), but alas, I have nowhere in my goofy kitchen for such a thing.
    Le Sigh.

You’re getting amazingly handy these days. I suspect you have a cute Etsy-esque toolbelt hiding somewhere…

As I said on Flickr, I love this idea! And I am impressed it was a three-hour project (INCLUDING the Home Depot trip!). That’s the sort of thing I always THINK will take me a couple hours and ends up taking all day. I am not nearly as handy as I seem to hope to be. The simplest tasks always find a way of going awry.

Is there a door behind the peg board or something? Trying to wrap my head around how you did what looks like a frame around the whole thing, and why it looks like there are hinges on the side. (I’m just nosy and detail oriented. Don’t mind me.)

Stef, good question! I actually meant to take a photo of the wall before. Yes, there’s a small “pantry-style” door there, which leads to our water heater. I made sure that the pegboard doesn’t impede our ability to open and close the door. Added bonus: the door provided plenty of stable surface for attaching the pot rack.
