Wednesday lovelies

January 20, 2010

It’s been raining for several days in SF, and I’m feeling the need for pretty things. I’m trying to save my pennies at the moment, so I haven’t pressed “purchase” on any of these beauties, but there’s no reason you should feel the same compulsion.

1. The entire Big Sur dining room line of furniture, from Crate and Barrel. I’ll take the Lyle chairs, too.

2. I have added I Know How To Cook to my ever-growing list of “things I might actually purchase sometime in the near-ish future.” This cookbook is super crush-worthy.

3. Yeah, I could NEVER wear this. But you totally should.

4. This necklace is just so dainty and pretty. I feel like you could wear it with anything in the world, and it would look perfect.

5. I think a custom-made fortune cookie painting would be the sweetest valentine around! If you have a spare $200 to spend on your honey, this takes the cake!

6. Oh, Anthropologie, you make the prettiest, sweetest dresses. Le sigh.

Go forth and shop, my friends! Someone needs to buy this stuff to enjoy, because it’s just too pretty to go only to anonymous strangers!

Wow! I love that dining room set! And that necklace – you’re exactly right – it would look great with jeans or a ball gown. Not that I ever wear ball gowns.

I should be getting my tax refund in the next couple of weeks. I’ll go buy a dress at Anthropologie — been needing an excuse to head over to Fourth Street — and think of you.

    All very nice choices!

I think I’ve said this before, but I don’t let myself go to either Etsy or Anthropologie’s sites very often. I know I will just waste and hour there and end up sighing over all the lovely things I cannot afford. I like seeing little highlights and previews now and then, though. I shall vicariously window shop through you.

I’ve loved those chairs ever since I first saw them years ago in some other catalog. But alas, the price tag on them means we sahll never be together. Sigh.

I feel lucky in that I’ve totally given up on Anthropologie, both for coveting and purchasing. I bought one sweater for $90 that was really poorly made, and a GORGEOUS sweater coat (for $200- it almost gave me a heart attack to order it- gah!) that was COATED in pills after only wearing it twice. Both were returned, and now I’m done with them. The quality simply doesn’t match the price, in my opinion.
But, their dresses are so very pretty… ;)

I’m way behind on this, but I just sumbled on your blog recently and I’ve been working my way through the archives.

One of my friends gave me a copy of “Je Sais Cuisiner” (“I Can Cook” in the original French) when I moved back to the US from Paris. It’s the bible of French cooking – everyone in France seems to own a copy – and an amazing cookbook. There are no drool-worthy photographs of the food, but it’s a very comprehensive resource, like a French “Joy of Cooking” only better.

It has all of my favorite French dishes, but instead of being overly ornate and complicated, most of the recipies are quite simple, even for traditionally complex items like boeuf bourguignon.

I always recommend it to my friends as an alternative to Julia’s “Mastering the Art” since you get all the flavor without all the fuss. (I dearly love Julia, but she was all about restaurant technique, not home cooking.)
